Inclusive 3D Campus Map

The Inclusive 3D Campus Map began as a collaborative project by five MSc Geomatics students from TU Delft during the elective course GEOIT1501 Synthesis Project.

Guided by project supervisors Gina Stavropoulou and Bastiaan van Loenen, and working together with the TU Delft Diversity & Inclusion Office, the project aims to develop a comprehensive, accessible and truly inclusive map that serves the needs of every student, staff member, and visitor at TU Delft.

Built on Principles: Our Core Values

Our map is guided by three core values that serve as a guidance for our map to foster a welcoming and accessible campus for all members of the TU Delft community through participatory design.

Diversity

Recognizing and representing the diverse backgrounds and needs of our users.

Equity

Ensuring fair access to our map for all users, regardless of their background or abilities.

Inclusion

Creating a welcoming environment for all users, ensuring they feel represented and valued.

Our Philosophy: Inclusion is Multi‑Faceted

Our team views inclusivity as a dynamic and multi‑faceted concept that extends across the full spectrum of individual needs. Therefore, this map is not designed for a single user; instead, it intentionally caters to diverse groups and individuals who require specific facilities or customized access to information. Our goal is to make the campus legible and welcoming for everyone.

To define what an "inclusive map" truly means at TU Delft, we hosted focus group sessions with key community representatives, including faculty DE&I officers, StudAble, TrueU, and DiversAbility.

DE&I Office

Promotes a respectful, accessible, diverse and inclusive community for all.

Together, we identified and prioritized the most common barriers on campus. Our map provides essential support for, but is not limited to, users with:

  • Mobility Needs: Clear mapping of wheelchair‑accessible facilities, ramps, and elevator information.
  • Identity Needs: Pinpointing supportive spaces like all‑gender restrooms for the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • Well‑being Needs: Locating contemplation/quiet rooms for neurodivergent, religious, and overwhelmed users.

We recognize that we cannot address all needs immediately. However, we believe that every small inclusion is a significant step toward a truly accessible campus. By making these specific resources visible, we aim to raise awareness across the entire community, creating a more supportive TU Delft environment for all.

A Continuous Approach

Creating a detailed, inclusive map that covers the entire TU Delft campus is an extensive effort requiring time. Due to these constraints, the map you see today is a work in continuous development.

We began by mapping the interior of the Faculty of Architecture (BK) building as our initial proof-of-concept. Our aim is to continuously add more interior data for all campus buildings as time goes on, expanding the map's coverage building by building. Additionally, we are committed to continuously improving our map through the valuable feedback we receive from our users. The best way to make a map usable for yourself is to be part of the process. Leave your thoughts, opinions and suggestions in the Feedback page so that it can be included in the map!
